The dial of the watch resembles a plate of American breakfast. There is a tiny sunny-side-up, pancakes, hash browns and bacon strips. The hands resemble a spoon, a fork and a blunt knife. While showing us this conversation starter from the American watch brand Projects, Aditya Jassi tells us that it was simply the fun dial that made him want to own this piece. "It's the cuteness of the dial that makes it stand out apart from the striking red breakfast plate," says the singer, songwriter and composer whose fascination for interesting watches go much beyond the treasure’s worth of the timepieces he has been collecting over the years.

"The watch has to communicate with me. Some watches are part of my collection because of the sheer value and prestige the names carry, some I am emotionally attached to, while there are also those with dials you cannot look away from. I am a person who falls for attractive dials. Hence, my watches are not just great to wear and feel good but also fascinating to look at," says Jassi, letting Chronoholic in on the stories that accompany his extensive set of wrist candies.

Music for Jassi, the son of documentary film-makers and authors, Jaswin Jassi and Kiran Jassi, wasn't a career option initially. He pursued civil aviation, while teaching music in colleges alongside, as a hobby. While he joined Sahara News Channel as a reporter, producer and anchor, he quit that job in 2006 to pursue music professionally. Jassi performs all across the country as well as abroad as the frontman of a live band called ‘Adi's Live’. "Making a mark in music wasn't easy in the city of Mumbai. But then Fame-X happened," recalls the singer. In 2006, at the behest of Dr. Palash Sen (of Euphoria fame), Jassi auditioned for FAME-X, and made it to the top ten of this reality show. There was no looking back after that for this performer who has also sung for the film Strangers and does live gigs across the world. "When you achieve what you have set out for, you want to toast your success with things you ardently admire. For me that would be beautiful watches," says Jassi, telling us how he had been enamoured of watches ever since noticing the black and gold Rado on his father's wrist. "I was six years old but that striking watch caught my fancy. I remember being gifted a Disney themed Timex watch a few years later as well. But the first serious watch I bought myself was the Casio Calculator watch in class 10. Those were the days of Infrared transmitters and once I had that I was the coolest kid in class!" reminisces Jassi.

Eventually the watch enthusiast graduated to luxury brands such as TAG Heuer but that Casio always is fondly remembered. "I was touring the UAE and playing in Dubai and Abu Dhabi when I purchased a TAG Heuer Grand Carrera. Those days Shah Rukh Khan used to endorse the timepiece and that was the pull actually even though as a watch brand Tag was top class. Over the years, I added an Aquaracer, a Monaco and Formula 1 to my collection. There was this sporty feel to the design but they were classy too."

Slowly the singer was getting accustomed to the universe of haute horology and once the musical gigs became regular Jassi knew he had arrived in the industry. "I viewed owning a Rolex as a mark of success. But I had to wait for my first Rolex; the Batman GMT, with a pronounced sporty vibe," says Jassi, going on to narrate how it landed in his collection. He was playing at a show in Chandigarh when a gentleman walked up to him and complimented him on his Bell & Ross. It was Yasho Saboo, the owner of Ethos. "Only a connoisseur of watches would be able to identify a Bell & Ross that quickly. I was really impressed and we started talking about watches. This was Yasho Saboo who introduced me to his son Pranav. They went on to give me a lovely Zeppelin acknowledging my penchant for luxury watches. I was really touched. I even told them about the Rolex Batman GMT that I had been looking for and the next day Pranav called and told me to pick up my piece from their showroom. This only proved the power of manifestation," he elaborates. While the first Rolex was close to his heart, the second one, a Rolex Submariner, was added to his kitty soon after while he was travelling in Abu Dhabi. "I had wanted the Rolex Hulk Submariner with a green bezel and dial but the classic black is an evergreen watch. If you want one Rolex I think the Submariner is what you should opt for. It is versatile, sturdy and timeless."

Jassi doesn't view watches as investments. He is emotionally attached to his pieces for the stories that unravel when he starts talking about them. Like the Omega Aquaterra Seamaster Terracotta he picks up. "Omega had launched a variety of colours in this section but the Terracotta was unique. But you must take a look at my Omega Moonwatch Speedmaster that the luxury brand launched on its 50th anniversary. This watch had received the Silver Snoopy Award from NASA astronauts in 1970.

If you look at the mechanism incorporated you will notice how snoopy zooms out in a rocket towards the moon. These little engineering marvels fascinated me about the model and I knew I had to own one," Jassi exclaims as he moves on to the Popeye Jumping hour Reservoir watch. "This was the India inspired edition as you would see Popeye playing cricket. The fact that the engineers put in so much thought to make these pieces is in itself a reason to covet them. They are conversation starters."

Talking of emotionally attached to watches, one classic piece that Jassi adores in his collection is the duoface Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. "This was gifted by my girlfriend so it is doubly special. It has history too. Jaeger-LeCoultre used to make movements for Rolex before it started making watches themselves. So the timepieces are from a watchmaker's brand. This Reverso model was initially designed for polo players so that they could alternate the steel face while playing. This is design, mechanism and precision all wrapped in one. And top it with a beautiful design that can steal attention whenever worn. I call this quiet luxury," explains the singer, who aspires to own a Vacheron Constantin 1921 Historique in platinum or rose gold some day. "It is a stunning watch that was made for driving. Notice the dial and you will know why I say so. I have my eyes set on it."

Interesting and classy dials alway make the cut for Jassi. To explain this, he shows us a Lucky Harvy watch with a 3D dragon positioned on the dial. "I wear it because of the beauty in the design. At the stroke of every hour the dragon spews out a fireball. This is art and creativity etched in a watch," quips the singer, while adding that while he cherishes his Rolex and Omegas, there are a few microbrands too in his collection that he loves wearing. For instance, a piece from Furlan Marri that pays an homage to Patek Philippe or a Sugess Moonphase Master. "The watches have to speak to you. I connect with my watches at a very personal level. Like the Rolex DateJust or the Green Oyster Perpetual 36. They are not flashy timepieces. But when you wear them, you move around with an air of elegance enveloping you. That is what my watches make me feel," signs off the singer.
