Urwerk unveils the final edition of the space-inspired UR-120 series
Urwerk unveils the final edition of the space-inspired UR-120 series

Swiss independent watchmaker Urwerk has announced the conclusion of its UR-120 series with the third and final edition timepiece, the UR-120 Blue Planet. Produced in a limited run of just 20 pieces, the new model combines the collection’s signature satellite time display with a deep blue aesthetic accented by functional gold elements.

One of Urwerk’s distinctive space-inspired watch collections, the UR-120 was first introduced in 2022 in monochromatic titanium and steel, followed by the darker UR-120 Space Black in 2023. With the new Blue Planet edition, Urwerk has closed the chapter on the collection.

The timepiece adopts a rich blue colour scheme inspired by images of Earth viewed from orbit and the vastness of space. The mechanical components on the dial are highlighted by gold accents, instantly drawing attention to the watch's moving parts. It’s the display that remains one of the most technically complex features of the UR-120 platform. Time is indicated through Urwerk’s signature satellite hour system, in which three hour satellites rotate around a central carousel. Each satellite travels along an arched minute track before yielding to the next hour’s display.

What distinguishes the UR-120 from previous satellite-based Urwerk models is the construction of the hour indicators. As a satellite reaches the left side of the display, its two rectangular blocks separate and pivot outward to form a V-shape. The motion resembles the well-known Vulcan salute popularised in science fiction culture. This transformation is not merely decorative; it is controlled through a sophisticated arrangement of independently pivoting arms, lyre-shaped springs, and Maltese cross mechanisms that coordinate the opening and closing sequence with precision.

Throughout the display cycle, the central carousel rotates while the satellites counter-rotate to maintain legibility. The result is a continuously changing display in which the hour markers split, rotate, reunite, and travel along the minute track during each one-hour interval. All markings and numerals are coated with luminous material for visibility in low-light conditions.

The UR-120 Blue Planet retains the collection’s distinctive case shape, measuring 47 mm wide, 44 mm long, and 15.8 mm thick. The case is constructed from sandblasted steel and features a blue PVD coating that provides a uniform finish across the surface. It is topped by a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal, while the smooth upper case remains free of visible screws. Articulated lugs, a relatively uncommon feature in Urwerk’s designs, extend the case profile while improving wrist comfort. A concealed spring integrated into the 6 o’clock lug helps fine-tune the fit. Additional design elements include the covered crown positioned at 12 o’clock beneath a swivelling protective cover with a gold-coloured hinge. The watch is water-resistant to 30 metres.

At its heart is the automatic Calibre UR-20.01. The movement operates at a frequency of 4 Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour, and delivers a power reserve of 48 hours. It also incorporates Urwerk’s Windfänger airscrew-governed rotor system for automatic winding.

This movement is built using a range of materials, including beryllium copper, anodised aluminium, ARCAP, titanium, brass, and LIGA-processed components. Circular graining, straight graining, sandblasting, Côtes de Genève motifs, and polished screw heads further accentuate its beauty. Several functional elements, including the lyre-shaped springs and Maltese crosses that control the display mechanism, receive a 24-karat yellow-gold PVD treatment.

The UR-120 Blue Planet is paired with a blue Cordura-textured calfskin strap featuring a ballistic-fibre-inspired pattern and a satin-brushed steel pin buckle.

Limited to just 20 pieces worldwide, the UR-120 Blue Planet is priced at approx. INR 1,36,95,000.
