It was in 1969 when Zenith unveiled its high-frequency El Primero A384, which beats at 36,000 vph or 5 Hz. The mechanism was an instant hit, not just among watch enthusiasts, but also in the Japanese pop culture, so much so that anime artists used it - first with a black dial, later with a silver dial - to outfit Daisuke Jigen in the popular Japanese 1971 animated series, Lupin III. The watch never existed in real life, but Zenith, in the last few years, revived it with a special edition series. The first edition appeared in 2019 as a 50-piece steel model with a black dial and gilt accents, followed by a unique auction piece by Phillips, which recreated the anime look faithfully. In 2020, Zenith released a 200-piece steel model with a white panda dial, and in 2021, a 250-piece edition came out that merged the black and silver anime designs into one symmetrical dial.

The latest in the series celebrates one of the icons of Japanese Manga - the Chronomaster Revival Daisuke Jigen Edition arrives in a 37 mm matte black microblasted titanium case. The model features a beige dial with black chronograph counters, a tachymeter scale, and beige Super-LumiNova on the hands and applied markers for a vintage look.

The timepiece not only commemorates the Manga, but also Zenith’s renowned movement creation. Inside, it is powered by the El Primero 400, the direct descendant of the El Primero A384. The calibre also beats at the 5 Hz frequency with a tenth-of-a-second precision, and a robust 50-hour power reserve. Through the sapphire caseback, the movement’s traditional finishings and Daisuke Jigen’s silhouette can be seen.

Completing the timepiece is Zenith’s historic ladder bracelet, designed with alternating open central links. It was originally designed in 1969 by Gay Frères for early El Primero models. This new version is crafted in matte-finished titanium, combining lightness, comfort, and durability.

Limited to just 200 pieces, the Zenith Chronomaster Revival Daisuke Jigen Edition is available exclusively at the Zenith pop-up at ISETAN Shinjuku on November 19, and will be available worldwide starting November 26 in Zenith boutiques, on the brand’s online store, and through selected authorised retailers.
