For the first time, Vacheron Constantin has introduced a minute repeater to its Overseas collection. The new Overseas Grand Complication Openface integrates a minute repeater, a perpetual calendar, a tourbillon, and a power reserve indicator. Despite its mechanical depth, its movement remains just 7.9 mm thick.
This grand complication is presented in a 44.5 mm grade 5 titanium case, redesigned over a year and a half to accommodate the repeater mechanism while retaining the silhouette of the Overseas line. The redesigned caseback allows for both water resistance (up to 30 metres) and acoustic clarity for the chiming mechanism.
The transparent sapphire dial follows the Openface approach, revealing the full complexity of the movement. Blue metallised rings highlight the time and calendar functions located at the 9, 12, and 3 o’clock positions, while 18K white gold hour markers and hands are coated with blue Super-Luminova®. The rhodium-plated wheels create a captivating contrast with NAC-treated bridges. The tourbillon at 6 o’clock, integrated with a small seconds function, further highlights the dial.
Powering the timepiece is Vacheron Constantin’s Calibre 2755 QP, made of 602 components. It drives the tourbillon, the complete perpetual calendar (with day, date, month, and leap year), and the minute repeater governed by a proprietary centripetal regulator, ensuring precise, musical chimes without noise or erratic timing. The movement is finished with mirror-polished hammers and engraved inertia weights.
The Overseas Grand Complication Openface is flanked with an integrated titanium bracelet and comes with two additional straps—blue alligator and blue rubber—each equipped with a comfort adjustment system. A folding titanium clasp and an additional interchangeable clasp are also included. The timepiece will be a limited production model.
What we think -
There is no doubt about the watchmaking prowess of Vacheron Constantin, and there is nothing to detract from the merits of this release or the beauty of the mechanism. But the brand’s over-reliance on the Overseas line is getting a bit long in the tooth. They may benefit from a few sales of the Overseas Grand Complication but their true strength lies elsewhere, which every purist will attest to.
