Glashütte Original adds new retro models to the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date
Glashütte Original adds new retro models to the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date

Glashütte Original has extended one of its most distinctive designs, the Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date, with two new limited editions of just 100 pieces each. The collection debuted in 2014, drawing inspiration from the TV-shaped watches of the 1970s, and has since become known for its flyback chronograph movement. The new timepieces exude the same vintage charm and are offered in bold dial colours—Plasma (a vivid shade of purple) and Fusion (lime green).

Produced in the brand’s dial manufactory in Glashütte, both dials feature a velvety matte texture. The layout remains true to the model’s identity—black subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock with a subtle vinyl groove finish, the signature Panorama Date at 6 o’clock, and a distinctive mechanical-digital 12-hour counter below 12 o’clock that reinforces the watch’s retro-futurist aesthetic.

The 40 mm x 40 mm rounded-square stainless steel case reflects the bold geometry of the 1970s, with alternating satin-brushed and polished finishes. It measures 14.1 mm thick and is water-resistant to 100 metres. A sapphire crystal protects the dial, while a sapphire caseback provides a full view of the movement.

Inside beats the in-house automatic chronograph movement Glashütte Original Caliber 37-02, produced entirely within the Saxon manufactory. It features a column-wheel chronograph with vertical clutch for precise engagement, a flyback function, and a stop-seconds mechanism for accurate time setting. The calibre runs at 4 Hz and delivers a 70-hour power reserve. Decorative finishes include polished bevels, blued screws, and a skeletonised rotor bearing the brand’s double-G emblem in 21K gold. The three-quarter plate is finished with Glashütte stripes, a hallmark of Saxon watchmaking.

Both watches are fitted with a matte black rubber strap with a pin buckle, priced at approx. ₹13,80,000, or an optional finely finished stainless steel bracelet with an integrated precision-adjustment clasp, priced at approx. ₹14,92,000.

What we think

Frankly these are the true hype pieces that the world looks forward to every year. Shame that this lovely watchmaking brand under the Swatch umbrella isn’t officially available in India.
