It all began in 2014 with the groundbreaking Octo Finissimo Tourbillon, which astonished the watch world with its record-setting 1.95 mm tourbillon movement. Since then, Bulgari has shattered ten world records for thinness and has transformed its Octo Finissimo line into an icon of ultra-thin watchmaking. Now, the latest chapter arrives in the form of the Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Marble (Ref. 104171)—a limited edition of only 30 pieces, distinguished by an opulent green marble dial and a yellow gold case that pays tribute to the brand’s Roman heritage.
The watch’s case measures 40 mm in diameter and just 4.85 mm thick, crafted from 18K yellow gold and finished with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces that emphasise the timepiece’s 110 sharply faceted surfaces. The crown, also in yellow gold, features a contrasting black ceramic insert. The watch is fitted with sapphire crystals on both sides and is water-resistant to 30 metres.
The dial is made from a rare Italian marble known as Verde Alpi—known for its deep green colour and naturally occurring light veins—sourced from the Val d’Aosta Valley in northwestern Italy, a region symbolically bordering Switzerland. Only 0.8 mm thick, the marble has been precision-cut to accommodate the tourbillon aperture at 6 o’clock. The gold-plated openworked hands and applied indices match the case, creating a warm contrast to the cool tones of the stone.
Beating inside the ultra-thin timepiece is the ultra-thin in-house manual-winding BVL 268 calibre. At just 1.95 mm in height, the movement’s thickness was defined by the flying tourbillon cage itself. The calibre beats at a frequency of 3 Hz and delivers a power reserve of 52 hours. It is finished with Côtes de Genève, perlage, bevelled screw heads and slots, and circular satin-brushed gears.
A green alligator leather strap completes the timepiece, matching the tones of the dial. It is secured with a polished 18K yellow gold pin buckle. The limited edition Octo Finissimo Tourbillon Marble is priced at approx. INR 1,40,95,000.
What we think -
For an iconic watch from one generation past, what Bvlgari is doing now could be seen as either upping the game or beating a dead horse. As passionate watch collectors and fans of the Octo Finissimo we would like to think it is the former, since precious gold releases with better calibres and unique dials should stand apart as doing justice to a fine example of design excellence and watchmaking.
