Independent Swiss watch brand Amida is renowned for its cult-classic, retro-futuristic "driver's" watch – the Digitrend – which was designed to let drivers check the time without taking their hands off the steering wheel. First launched at the Basel Watch Fair in 1976 and revived in 2024 (after a dormant period caused by the Quartz Crisis), the brand has now unveiled the latest evolution of the Digitrend – the Digitrend OSII Black, a limited edition of 150 pieces. The model builds on the distinctive design language of the original 1976 model, combining its retro-futuristic character with new materials and improved functionality.

Amida has positioned the OSII Black as a continuation of an unfinished design vision. Rather than treating the past as a source of nostalgia, the brand has updated the concept with modern engineering and contemporary watchmaking techniques. The most noticeable change is the introduction of a full sapphire hood. The watchmaker has replaced the traditional metal upper shell with a transparent structure machined from a single block of sapphire that covers the movement while allowing light to reach deep into the watch's architecture, revealing its internal components.

To complement the exposed architecture, Amida developed a new black-coated internal framework made from DLC-coated 316L stainless steel. Rather than hiding structural elements beneath the case, the framework has been designed as a visual component integrated into the watch's overall aesthetic, while the black finish also creates contrast against the illuminated display and mechanical components.

Another major development is the introduction of a fully luminous display. This marks the first time in a Digitrend model that the jumping-hour display remains fully visible in low-light conditions. Light entering through the sapphire hood charges the BGW9 Super-LumiNova elements used on the display, while additional luminous accents on the internal framework create what the brand describes as a "nocturnal form."

Its case is crafted from 316L stainless steel with satin-brushed and polished surfaces. Measuring 39.6 mm wide, 39 mm long, and 15.6 mm thick, it maintains the distinctive wedge-shaped profile that made the original Digitrend instantly recognisable. A sapphire prism crystal forms part of the display system, reflecting the time indications towards the wearer. The watch offers water resistance to 50 metres.

Powering the Digitrend OSII Black is a Soprod P024 Swiss automatic movement paired with the brand’s proprietary jumping-hour module. Developed in-house, the module consists of nine mechanical components and six screws and drives the brand's signature Light Reflective Display (LRD) system, which uses separate discs to display the hours and minutes. The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and offers a power reserve of 38 hours. It is finished with a sandblasted and circular-grained skeletonised oscillating weight, along with rhodium-plated components.

The timepiece comes with the option of a charcoal Alcantara strap lined with orange calfskin or a matching metal bracelet. Both versions feature a stainless-steel buckle and a 22 mm lug width.
The Digitrend OSII Black is priced at approx. INR 6,05,000.
