Introduced in 1945 by Finnish author Tove Jansson, the Moomins are one of the favourite characters in children’s literature. The hippo-shaped fairy tale characters have also inspired Finnish watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, who previously created Moomin-themed watches under his brand S.U.F. Helsinki. in celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Moomins, Sarpaneva unveils a new Moomin-inspired timepiece in two variations—a monochromatic black-and-white version, reminiscent of the original illustrations, and a coloured version. Both editions are enhanced with Super-LumiNova, allowing them to glow vividly in the dark.
The Sarpaneva Moomin 80 is housed in the watchmaker’s signature Korona case, distinguished by its scalloped edges. Measuring 42mm, the case is crafted from high-grade Outokumpu steel, topped with a sapphire crystal treated with multiple layers of anti-reflective coating. The crown is positioned at 4 o’clock for ergonomic comfort.
The dial features an enchanting scene from Comet in Moominland, Jansson’s 1946 novel, depicting Moomintroll against a starry night sky with streaking comets. This intricate design is achieved through a three-part construction, illuminated by ten different shades of Super-LumiNova. The hours are displayed via a rotating disc, visible through an aperture at the top of the dial, while the minutes are indicated by a two-toned central hand, also treated with Super-LumiNova for enhanced readability in the dark.
Turn the watch over to reveal the automatic Soprod A10 calibre, visible through the sapphire caseback. Beating at 4Hz, the movement provides a 42-hour power reserve and is adorned with Sarpaneva’s signature Moonface on the oscillating weight.
Limited to just 30 pieces per version, the Sarpaneva Moomin 80 comes with a choice of coloured leather straps or the steel Moonbridge bracelet. Prices start at approximately INR 12,25,000.

What we think -
Stepan Sarpaneva, known for his neo-gothic yet playful designs, once again captivates with his artistic vision. The Super-LumiNova accents, in both the monochrome and coloured versions, create a perfect balance of nostalgia and modernity. Paying homage to a beloved fantasy character is usually a tricky task but Sarpaneva embodies their latest collaboration with aplomb. Pity, the brand is not officially available in India.
