Commemorating its 40-year journey in international tennis sponsorship, Swiss watchmaker Rado has launched the new Captain Cook x Tennis Limited Edition watch. Since its first major involvement with the sport at the 1985 Swiss Open in Gstaad, Rado has cemented itself as a central figure in professional tennis. Rado secured sponsorship of seven major events in 1989 to 33 global tournaments by 1991. During this period, Rado established itself as the most visible watch brand on the international tennis circuit, thanks in part to its iconic court corner clocks that displayed temperature, humidity, and serve speeds, bringing in real-time data presentation for spectators.

By the mid-1990s, Rado's association with tennis reached new heights when it became the Official Watch of the ATP Tour and the official timekeeper of all Davis Cup matches. Its branding was seen in elite tournaments around the world, including the French Open and the Australian Open. The brand’s footprint reached tennis events in Tokyo, Johannesburg, Melbourne, Toronto, and beyond, while maintaining a strong presence in Europe and North America. Today, it supports premier tournaments such as the Mubadala Citi DC Open in Washington D.C., Swiss Indoors Basel, and EFG Swiss Open Gstaad, among others. Rado also associated with top tennis players like Joakim Nyström of Sweden as its first ambassador, and featured global stars like Sergi Bruguera, Julia Görges, Cameron Norrie, and Barbora Krejčíková, among others. In 2015, Rado launched the YoungStars program to cultivate the next generation of tennis stars and became an official partner of Swiss Tennis in 2016.

This 40-year-long partnership with tennis deserved a tribute—the Rado Captain Cook x Tennis Limited Edition is a limited edition of 1985 pieces, an ode to the year this journey started.

Housed in a 39 mm stainless steel case, the watch features a circular brushed plasma high-tech ceramic bezel insert, a gradient dial shifting from ruthenium to white, and a set of dark yellow Super-LumiNova® accents that mimic tennis ball hues. These yellow dots are placed at 15, 30, and 40 minutes, with a final dot at 12 o’clock representing ‘game’, a nod to the tennis scoring system. The screw-down case back features engraved motifs of grass, clay, and hard court surfaces, representing Rado’s presence across all tennis terrains. The watch offers water resistance up to 300 metres.

The watch runs on the Rado calibre R763 automatic movement equipped with an antimagnetic Nivachron™ hairspring. The movement beats at a frequency of 3 Hz and offers an 80-hour power reserve.

The Rado Captain Cook x Tennis Limited Edition is paired with a polished and brushed stainless steel bead-of-rice bracelet with the EasyClip system for a quick strap change. Additionally, three NATO-style straps are included in court-matching colours—blue/white for the hard court, green/white for grass, and orange/white for the clay court.

The timepiece is priced at INR 2,78,700.

What we think -

Associations with Tennis notwithstanding this is a cool addition to the extremely popular Captain Cook range.
