Although rare, making up just a fraction of the millions of watches produced every year, stone dial watches have taken a significant place in watchmaking, giving timepieces a unique appeal over mass-produced uniformity. On similar lines, independent watchmaker Chronoswiss has introduced its first natural stone dial watches – Small Second Jasper and Small Second Serpentine. Limited to 50 pieces each, the two watches represent the brand’s journey from Germany to its present-day Swiss identity. The Jasper comes from Germany, and the Serpentine has been sourced from the region around Zermatt and the Matterhorn.

The stones give each timepiece a naturally individual appearance, as every dial is cut from a different section of the material, revealing its own combination of veins, textures, and colours. The Small Second Jasper features warm beige, brown, and ivory tones, and is particularly associated with the historic German stone-cutting centre of Idar-Oberstein, while the Small Second Serpentine has a vivid green surface with patterns formed millions of years ago when the stone was part of an ancient ocean floor before geological forces lifted it into the Alps.

On the dial, the central hours and minutes are accompanied by a small-seconds display at 9 o’clock. The Serpentine uses a polished natural Serpentine main dial with a hand-guilloché small-seconds subdial finished with fine sandblasting and a galvanic 5N treatment. The Jasper has a matte natural stone dial and a hand-guilloché small-seconds subdial with a fine sandblasted black galvanic finish. Both watches use feuille-shaped hands with Super-LumiNova for low-light legibility.

With a 40 mm diameter, 11.5 mm thickness, and 50 mm lug-to-lug length, both watches retain the architecture of Chronoswiss’s Small Second design. Their solid 17-part cases feature a polished fluted bezel, curved domed sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment, a streamlined onion crown, and a screwed, satin-finished sapphire exhibition caseback. Water resistance is rated at 30 metres. The Jasper comes in stainless steel, while the Serpentine combines stainless steel with 18K red gold for a warmer two-tone appearance.

Inside, the watches are powered by Chronoswiss Manufacture Calibre C.6000. The automatic calibre utilises a Glucydur triangular balance wheel and Nivarox 1 balance spring. It operates at 4 Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour, and provides approximately 55 hours of power reserve. Fine regulation is handled through an excenter, while Incabloc provides shock protection. Visible through the sapphire caseback, the movement features a skeletonised tungsten rotor mounted on ball bearings, Geneva-striped and ruthenium-plated bridges, along with polished components including the armature, escape wheel, and screws.

The collection’s emphasis on natural materials extends to the straps. The Jasper is paired with a brown calfskin leather strap, while the Serpentine comes with a green calfskin strap. The price for Small Second Serpentine is marked at approx. INR 13,55,000, and the Small Second Jasper at approx. INR 14,00,000.
