Swiss watchmaker Angelus has revisited one of its most unique mid-century creations with the release of the Chronographe Médical x Massena LAB (Ref. 0CHAS.A01A.V010S). Originally introduced in the 1960s as a ‘doctor’s watch,’ the original timepiece was designed specifically to assist medical professionals with dual scales for reading vital signs. That watch featured a pulsometer to measure heart rate—two scales for reading the patient’s vitals—and a rare asthmometer scale for measuring respiratory rate. This modern reissue, developed in collaboration with William Massena of Massena LAB, brings that concept back while preserving its rare and functional character.
The limited edition of just 99 pieces stays true to the ancestor and features both a pulsometer and an asthmometer—two scales rarely, if ever, seen together on a modern chronograph. The pulsometer is colour-coded in green, black, or red, depending on the severity of the reading at the time of examination. The asthmometer is subtly placed in red along the minute track. This configuration ensures the dial remains both highly legible and functional, as it was in the original model.
The stainless steel case has been updated to a more contemporary 39 mm size from the previous 37 mm. The domed, silvered opaline dial features rhodium-finished appliqué hour markers and Arabic numerals, all treated with green-glowing Super‑LumiNova® for visibility in low light. The chronograph operates through a single mushroom-shaped pusher at 2 o’clock.
Powering the watch is a new version of Angelus’ A5000 calibre, tailored specifically for this model. It offers hours, minutes, small seconds at 9 o’clock, and a monopusher chronograph function that measures up to one minute—perfect for taking quick pulse and respiration readings. The movement beats at 3 Hz and features a column wheel and horizontal clutch. Notably, the design excludes a 30‑minute counter to remain focused solely on medical diagnostics.
The Chronographe Médical x Massena LAB is paired with a hand‑stitched golden-brown Novonappa® calfskin strap, complete with ecru stitching and a stainless‑steel pin buckle. The watch is water-resistant up to 30 metres and is priced at approximately INR 17,00,000.
What we think -
This is the kind of watchmaking Angelus is known for, and the collaboration with Massena Labs is the icing on the cake. Movement, aesthetic, feel, everything on point.
